Distance from Kandy – 2.2 km (10 minutes)
The Udwattekele sanctuary is a forest reserve situated in Lover’s Walk in Kandy. It is extremely popular for bird sighting as there are many species of birds inhabiting the area. It also has small to medium sized mammals, reptiles such as snakes, plant species, shrubs and trees. It is a forest of religious importance because there are Buddhist meditation sites and three rock shelter dwelling for Buddhist monks. It is believed that the Brahmin named Senkada, from whom the name Senkadagala is derived for Kandy, lived in a cave here.
