Introduction to Nuwara Eliya Racecourse
Nuwara Eliya Racecourse is situated along Ambulance Track in Nuwara Eliya. It is the only remaining venue for horse in the country. The circumference of the track is 1800 m at an elevation of 1868 m above sea level making it one of the highest race courses in the world.
History Nuwara Eliya Racecourse
Horse racing was introduced to Sri Lanka by John Baker, the brother of Samuel Baker who was the British explorer credited for discovering Nuwara Eliya. Established in 1875, the racecourse hosts notable races such as the Governor’s Cup, Queen’s Cup, Independence Cup and RTC Magic Million Cup.
Getting to Nuwara Eliya Racecourse
From Nuwara Eliya travel approximately 4 km along the Peradeniya-Badulla-Chenkaladi Highway and turn to Ambulance Track to reach the Nuwara Eliya Racecourse.
