The National Museum of Colombo, also known as the Sri Lanka National Museum is the largest museum in Sri Lanka and is situated in Colombo 7. It is one out of the two museums situated in Colombo and is maintained by the Department of National Museum of the central government. The museum holds many artifacts in connection with the history of Sri Lanka including the crown and throne of the Kandyan kings. Established on 1st January 1877, it was formerly known as The Colombo Museum and its founder was Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon at the time.
