Kinihirigala is a mountain which is situated in the Dolosbage mountain range in Kandy. It is also known by the name “Kinihira Kanda” and “Rakshagala”. Kinihirigala is an average hike, not too easy and not too difficult either. According to legends, Kinihirigala has been the location where King Ravana lived maintaining an iron workshop. Folklore describes a fire which erupted at the location after which the burnt iron converted to rocks. The village of Alugolla, which is situated on one side of the mountain, is believed to have been where the ashes of the burnt iron had gone. The summit of the mountain gives stunning views of the surrounding valleys and mountains including the Alagalla Mountain and the top of the Ambuluwawa Tower.
Getting to Kinihirigala
From Kandy travel along the Colombo – Kandy Road, Peradeniya – Badulla – Chenkalady Highway and Gampola – Craighead Road passing Dehipagoda up to Dolosbage to reach Kinihirigala which is situated in the Dolosbage mountain range in Kandy.
