The Galle Dutch Fort is situated in the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka and was built first by the Portuguese in 1588. It was later extensively secure by the Dutch during the 17th century when they invaded the country. The specialty of the Galle Fort lies in that it maintains a polished look even after more than 400 years in existence. This is due to the reconstruction work done by the Archeological Department of Sri Lanka. It is named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also known as “Ramparts of Galle”. The Galle Fort withstood the Tsunami which struck the country in Boxing Day, 2004 and has since been restored.
