Elephant Pass is a military base which is situated in the gateway of Jaffna Peninsula in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It was controlled by the LTTE during the civil war of Sri Lanka. At present it is controlled by the Sri Lanka Army. Apart from being an important military base, it used to be the largest salt field in Sri Lanka. Elephant Pass is also known as the “Gateway to Jaffna” because it controls access to Jaffna Peninsula. Hence, it used to be a regular battle site during the civil war. Elephant connects Chavakachcheri in the Jaffna peninsula to the mainland of Sri Lanka.

Getting to Elephant Pass

From Jaffna travel along the Kandy Road passing Chavakachcheri up to Pachchilapalli to reach the Elephant Pass.
