Distance from Kandy – 62.6 km (2 hours 10 minutes)

Belilena is a large cave which is situated approximately 8 km from the town of Kitulgala. The cave is believed to have evidence of prehistoric human presence which dates back to 32,000 years ago. Visiting the site requires a rope or rope ladder, so it is not an easy task to complete. Due to its historic and archaeological importance, this cave has been declared as an archaeological reserve by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.

Getting to Belilena Cave

From Kandy travel along the Kandy Road passing Peradeniya, Gampola and Ulapane up to Nawalapitiya. Then drive along the Ginigathena Road passing Ginigathhena up to Kitulgala to reach the Belilena Cave.
