Barberyn Island is situated close to Beruwala town in the south-west coast of Sri Lanka and is 3.25 ha in size. The island is popular for its 34 m high lighthouse. The lighthouse is known in the names of “Barberyn Lighthouse” and “Beruwala Lighthouse”. The cylindrical white lighthouse, built by the British colonials using granite, was first lit on November 1889. This lighthouse is an archaeologically protected monument which is managed by the Sri Lanka Port Authority. It is one of the four international lighthouses located in Sri Lanka.
Getting to Barberyn Island
From Colombo travel along Colombo – Galle Main Road passing Moratuwa, Wadduwa and Kalutara up to Beruwala to reach the Barberyn Island.
