Baobab Tree is an ancient tree which is located in Pallimunai, Mannar. It also known as “the upside-down tree” because its branches look like roots. Other names given for this tree are baoboa, bottle tree, monkey bread tree and ali gaha (elephant tree) because its bark resembles the skin of an elephant. Baobab Tree is believed to have been brought to Sri Lanka by ancient Arabian traders. Baobab is a native tree of Africa, Madagascar and Australia. There are approximately 40 baobab trees in Sri Lanka, out of which 34 are found in Mannar. This particular baobab tree in Pallimunai is known to be the oldest one out of all. It is over 700 years old and is also one of the largest trees in Sri Lanka based on its circumference which is 19.5 m. This tree stands at a height of 7.5 m.
