Sastrawela Mani Naga Pabbatha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple that is situated in Arugam Bay. The temple is believed to date back to the time of King Mahanaga who was the first king of the kingdom of Ruhuna. Today, only ruins of the temple remain at the site. The temple ruins consist of an incomplete stupa and a few scattered granite pillars. Although the temple is believed to have been built by King Mahanaga, it has been renovated by King Kavantissa and his son, Saddatissa. Some believe that the temple was built by Maninaga, who was a Naga king. The Nagas were a pre-historic tribe which lived in the country before the arrival of the Aryans in 6th Century B.C.
