Senanayake Samudraya is the largest reservoir and man-made lake in Sri Lanka, situated in Inginiyagala in Ampara district. It was formed by damming the Gal Oya River and several other small rivers in between two mountains in Inginiyagala. The Senanayake Samudraya is an iconic reservoir in Sri Lanka, built after gaining independence. It was built in 1953 and is also known as “Inginiyagala Reservoir”. It is a part of the Gal Oya multipurpose irrigation system project, which was completed by the first prime minister of Sri Lanka, D.S. Senanayake.

The Senanayake Samudraya consists f a catchment area of 384 square miles with an earthen dam, 3600 feet in length and 140 feet in height. The reservoir can store 770000 acre feet capacity of water.

Getting to Senanayake Samudraya

From Ampara travel along the Ampara – Inginiyagala Road passing Polwatta up to Inginiyagala to reach the Senanayake Samudraya which is situated in Inginiyagala Dam Road in Inginiyagala.
