Introduction to Buddhangala Raja Maha Viharaya

Buddhangala Raja Maha Viharaya is a historic Buddhist monastery that is situated deep in the forests in Ampara. The monastery is spread across an area of 1280 acres covering 5 rocks where the remains of this ancient historic site can be seen. The name “Buddhangala” is derived because of the rock formation which bears resemblance to Lord Buddha in a lying position.

History of Buddhangala Raja Maha Viharaya

This region is believed to belong to the Digamadulla Kingdom which was started in the 4th century BC by Prince Digayu. The history of the monastery is also believe to date back to the beginning of the Digamadulla Kingdom. Buddhangala Raja Maha Viharaya is renowned for having the stupa which enshrines the relics of Sariputta and Moggallana theros, who were the two chief disciples of Lord Buddha.

From Ampara travel approximately 6 km along Dharmapala Mawatha to Buddhangala Road to reach the Buddhangala Raja Maha Viharaya.
