Bandagiriya Rajamaha Viharaya is situated in Bandagiriya, at the very far end of the Hambantota district in the Southern Province. The ancient Buddhist temple is located at the summit of a rock which is known to be the highest peak in the Hambantota district. According to the Dhathuwamsa, which is one of the ancient chronicles of Sri Lankan history, the temple is believed to have been built by King Kavantissa in the 2nd century BC. It is also mentioned in the ancient graffiti discoeverd in Sigiriya from 6th to 8th century AD. Ruins of the ancient temple include two stupas and a statue of Lord Buddha in the seated position. The summit of the rock provides amazing panoramas of the surrounding vistas.

From Tangalle travel along the Southern Expressway, Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Highway and Hambantota – Gonnoruwa – Meegahajandura Road passing Netolpitiya, Jandura, Abeyesekaragama and Gonnoruwa up to Mattala to reach the Bandagiriya Rajamaha Viharaya which is situated in Bandagiriya, at the very far end of the Hambantota district in the Southern Province.
