Introduction to National Sandun Uyana

National Sandun Uyana is situated along Pahalawela Road in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. It is Sri Lanka’s first and only state-funded national sandalwood garden. The construction of the garden began on July 20, 2021 according to the vision of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. It was opened to the public by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on July 20, 2021.

Features of National Sandun Uyana

The National Sandun Uyana highlights areas of the country that need to be developed in terms of green zones and related infrastructure facilities. The garden occupies 9 acres of precious land that belongs to the Urban Development Authority (UDA). The garden consists of 300 valuable and rare red sandalwood plants. It also includes 900 white sandalwood plants and a number of ornamental plants with flowers of varying colours. The sandalwood plants are planted in a bed that is about 2 feet above ground level which helps protect these precious plants.
