Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple which is situated along Rubberwatte Road in Tissamaharama in the Hambantota district.

Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple which is situated along Rubberwatte Road in Tissamaharama in the Hambantota district. It is the largest stupa in the southern part of the island with a height of 47 m and a circumference of 167 m. The site of the temple was consecrated by Lord Buddha himself and it is one of the four major Buddhist monasteries established in the country after the arrival of Mahinda Thero. According to the chronicle Mahwamsa, Tissamaharama Raja Maha Viharaya was built by King Kavantissa in the 2nd century BC. The stupa has undergone renovations several times in history.
