Bundala National Park is situated in Weligatta, Bundala in the Southern Province. It is an important wintery ground for migratory birds in the country. It was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1969 and was later given the status of national park in 1993. It is the first wetland to be declared as a Ramsar site in the country. It is also the fourth national park in Sri Lanka to be designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Bundala National Park is popular for its birds which includes the Blue-talied bee eater, Greater flamingo, Waterfowl and many other large water birds. Apart from birds, the park also includes many species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Getting to Bundala National Park

From Tangalle travel along the Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Highway passing Hambantota up to Bundala to reach the Bundala National Park which is situated in Weligatta, Bundala.
