The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is an important Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka and is situated Kelaniya. The temple is believed to have a deep association with the political status of the country. It is said that when the Kelaniya Temple rose, the country and its administration rose whereas when the temple fell the country and its administration fell as well. The temple bears importance due to its image of reclining Gautama Buddha and paintings of popular Sri Lankan artist Solias Mendis. These paintings depict important life events of Lord Buddha.
